The site is built on public data and photos generously shared by photographers. Here's where everything comes from and the terms it's used under.
Permit data
Contractor and permit information comes from the City and County of San Francisco's open data portal, DataSF, published under the Open Data Commons Public Domain Dedication and License (PDDL) 1.0 and the City's data terms of use. The City provides the data "as is" and doesn't endorse this site. We filter, classify and summarize it; any errors in that processing are ours.

Map data
The city map combines several public sources. Each layer in the map's legend shows where it came from and when we last fetched it. We refresh them weekly.
- Base map: map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (Open Database License), vector tiles from OpenFreeMap in the OpenMapTiles schema. The map style is our own. Drawn with MapLibre GL JS (BSD license).
- Terrain, hillshade and contour lines: elevation from the U.S. Geological Survey's 3D Elevation Program, via the Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data (full attribution). Contours are generated by us and smoothed, so treat elevations as approximate.
- Liquefaction and landslide zones: California Geological Survey, Seismic Hazards Program. These zones are for planning and disclosure, not a site-specific assessment.
- BART lines and stations from BART's GTFS feed; Caltrain lines and stations from Caltrain's GTFS feed. Muni route names and schedule links are from SFMTA's routes page. None of these agencies endorses this site.
- Everyday places (groceries, pharmacies, coffee and so on): Overture Maps Foundation places, under CDLA Permissive 2.0, plus a short list of stores we checked against each chain's own store locator.
- Summer fog and warmth: computed by us from Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery (contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2020–2025) and USGS Landsat 8 and 9 surface temperature (public domain), via Microsoft Planetary Computer. Fog is the share of summer mornings each area was under fog or low cloud; warmth is ground temperature on clear summer days compared with the city average, not air temperature.
- Golf courses, courts, fields, public pools and skate parks: mapped by OpenStreetMap contributors (Open Database License). Schoolyard courts and private facilities are left out or labeled.
- Michelin-starred restaurants: compiled by us from the published MICHELIN Guide California selection. We list facts (name, star count, address) only.
- From DataSF (PDDL 1.0):
